Crowns

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are used to fix damaged teeth. They are designed to closely resemble your natural teeth, and can strengthen a tooth after you have undergone another dental procedure or have damaged it in some way. They are somewhat similar to porcelain veneers in that they supplement your existing tooth structure, but veneers treat cosmetic issues while crowns typically treat restorative ones.

When Do We Recommend Crowns?

Crowns can solve a variety of issues including chipped, cracked, and worn down teeth. They are also used after other procedures like root canal treatments or filling particularly large cavities. Overall, if your tooth needs to be strengthened or repaired, a crown is likely a viable option. When we are working on a molar, we could suggest a metal crown, as these can withstand more bite pressure and will not be noticed in the back of your mouth. If we are treating a tooth towards the front, we can use PCM (porcelain-fused-to-metal) crowns because they look like your existing teeth yet are still strong and durable.

Inlays & Onlays

In some cases, you might just need a partial crown. These are used when the damage to a tooth is too severe for a filling but not extensive enough to require a full crown. Inlays are usually used when a cavity is too large for a normal filling. These are made from porcelain and go inside your tooth. An onlay, on the other hand, goes on top of a tooth rather than in it. It is quite similar to a crown, but it is smaller and it doesn’t go over the entire tooth; it just covers the damaged portion.
